Let’s start with the foundational stuff.
The Importance of Protein
Protein is vital to a healthy diet, as it’s one of the essential building blocks for many cell components in your body. Protein helps satisfy hunger, build muscle tissue, maintain lean muscle mass and provides you with energy.
To help your body function at its best, it’s super important that you get enough protein in your diet.
If you are not getting the amount of protein your body needs, your body will go to it’s next best source for protein; it’s own muscles. This can lead to muscle loss.
Why You Don't Want To Lose Muscle
1. Muscle Increases Your Metabolic Rate
The muscle cells in your body use energy, while the fat cells store energy.
By increasing and maintaining lean muscle, you increase your body’s energy requirements. This basically means you’ll actually need to eat more calories on a daily basis, which is cool if you’re a food-lover like me. 😉
Plus, who truly wants to feel like they have to eat less? If given the choice, I’d rather be able to eat more.
So, to put it simply, the more lean muscle you have, the more you will naturally increase in your metabolic rate. By having a higher metabolic rate, you are helping your body burn more fat and calories on a daily basis, even at rest!
2. Muscle Helps You Look Lean and Gives You A More Aesthetically-Pleasing Shape
Did you know that a pound of fat weighs the same as a pound of muscle? 😉
That’s a trick question, hehe.
They weigh the same because they weigh the same.
The difference between the two is actually the volume, or how much space they take up.
Below is an image that shows what 5lbs. of fat looks like VS. what 5lbs. of lean muscle looks like:

As you can see, the fat takes up more space than the muscle, even though they weigh the same amount. The muscle is simply more dense than the fat, which means it’s more compact and takes up LESS space.
This is why you shouldn’t care so much about the number on your scale, any why it’s better to focus more on how your clothes fit. When you shed fat and build lean muscle, you will actually appear smaller and your clothes will feel looser (you may even need to get smaller-sized clothes!)
That being said, a 160 pound person that has a lot of fat will actually appear bigger than a 160 pound person who has a lot of lean muscle.
Take me for example – in the photos below, I weighed roughly the same amount. The difference was in the amount of muscle and fat I had.
On the left my body fat percentage was clearly much higher (this was taken right before I started my own Herbalife nutrition program). On the right, my lean muscle percentage went up and my body fat percentage went down.
I weighed about 160 pounds in each photo, but because I had increased my protein levels, and stayed consistent on a strength training program, combined with my own nutrition program, I was able to achieve a body I felt much more comfortable and confident to live in.
Even though I weighed the same number on the scale, my clothes fit better, and I looked leaner and more shapely, instead of looking like a blob. Ha! I was also became physically stronger, which was another goal I had been striving for.
Since I increased my lean muscle mass, I increased my metabolic rate, which meant I was also able to eat more calories and continue burning fat, even on my rest days.
All of this boosted my confidence and I naturally began showing up more confidently in life because of it. When I showed up with more confidence and positivity, I noticed that I also started attracting more quality people, opportunities, and life experiences, which is not too bad of a side effect, don’t you think? 😉
3. Muscle Helps You Improve Your Bone Mass
Muscle works to strengthen the bones it surrounds and supports, which makes your bones denser and helps you reduce your risk of injury.
By completing strength training exercises on a consistent schedule (usually 3-5 days a week,) and combining that with your own customized nutrition plan, you can improve your bone density, core strength and balance.
4. Muscles Help Decrease Your Chances of Disease
People who work out are less at risk of getting diseases than sedentary people. Studies have shown that strength training can help reduce the risk of heart disease by improving cardiovascular function and improving blood chemistry.
By working out, eating a balanced and healthy diet high in protein, and getting enough rest, you can certainly achieve that dream body you have always wanted, while also keeping yourself in GOOD HEALTH.
