For the past few months, I've been meaning to spend more time on this blog but something was holding me back, not allowing me to write. I didn't really realize what it was exactly until this past week when I was in the admin area of my site, looking around at all my drafts, pages, posts, categories and tags.
That's when I realized my blog was an absolute mess and in order for me to move forward with any kind of new content creation, I needed to reorganize everything. Not only that, but I really needed to "niche it down," because I was kind of all over the place with topics.
PLUS, there was a recent update I made to my WordPress theme that somehow deleted my header and I just couldn't figure out how to get it back (but at this point, I didn't really care anymore.)
So I decided what better time than now to give my blog an entire facelift.
I figured once I got the blog more organized and focused, it would be a lot easier to write because I would have a better sense of direction and more structure, which would hopefully lead to more streamlined content creation.
So I started to think about what I wanted, what I needed to change and how I was going to go about doing that.

MY AESTHETIC GOALS FOR THIS BLOG
- Light & bright colors to symbolize happiness and a go-with-the-flow kind of attitude
- A faint, beachy vibe because that's what grounds me and also shows off a bit of my personality
MY FUNCTIONALITY GOALS FOR THIS BLOG
- Minimalistic & organized so it doesn't overwhelm my readers (or myself!) and makes it look more professional
- Use a responsive WordPress theme so that it looks good on a phone, tablet, laptop or desktop
TIME TO CHANGE MY BLOG'S THEME
I have been considering trying the Genesis Framework for a little while now and figured this might be a good time to do that, since I wasn't in too much of a rush and had some time to kind of play around with it.
I did a little reading and ended up getting the StudioPress Pro Plus All-Theme Package ($499.95 for 1 year, then $99.95 every year after.) This package gives me over 50 themes I can choose from and use to design blogs and websites with. It also includes unlimited support, updates and domains that I can build on (which is awesome since I have multiple blogs and also design client websites on the regular!)
I ended up choosing the Lifestyle Theme, which I'm happy with so far!
GETTING MY CONTENT MORE FOCUSED
I had to do some deep thinking to figure out how to get my content more organized and focused.
I realized that it can be rather challenging figuring out exactly what topics you want to talk about on a blog, especially when you first start out.
For example, when I first began blogging, just over 2 years ago, I didn't know what I was going to need to talk about (this blog originally started out as a place where I could vent and provide myself some sort of outlet/therapy vessel,) so I just let my thoughts flow freely and wrote about anything and everything that was on my mind or that I was struggling with at that time.
The goal was just to start somewhere and to try to not be a perfectionist (which was a struggle in itself because getting things done right is just how I'm hard-wired.) I read from other successful bloggers that thinking and analyzing too much can totally paralyze you to the point where nothing happens, simply because you end up doing nothing. I really had to make an extra effort to just write and publish and move forward instead of dwelling on the idea that it could be better and that I should go back and fix it or delete it and start all over.
I had to give my blog the permission and the freedom to become it's own thing and to grow right along with me.
And to stop caring so much about what other people think! The blog is going to change throughout my journey, and I need to accept that.
Looking back at where I was vs where I am now, I realize that "growing" doesn't necessarily mean getting bigger, like adding more topics (which may have also been what was subconsciously overwhelming me,) but rather simplifying and "niching down" my topics so they are more targeted towards a certain audience.
So I now had to figure out who I wanted my target audience to be.
In order to figure that out, I had to first figure out what I want this blog to ultimately turn into some day. Yes, I want it to follow my journey and show the ups and downs of what I struggled through in order to be successful and live the kind of lifestyle I want to live, but I also want it to provide content that would actually be valuable to certain types of people.
Instead of blogging about my day, what I like to eat, and the fun stuff I do, I thought it would be better if I focused more on stuff like analyzing business experiments, entrepreneurial how-to's, and personal development. I could always use social media to show off the more fun, day-to-day stuff and people can follow me there for that kind of stuff.
But at the same time, I want to promote health and wellness as well, because it's really important to becoming the best version of yourself! I guess I'll have to figure out how to work that stuff into this blog at a later time.
So after all of that, I decided I want my blog to be more focused on helping other entrepreneurial types who are looking for most, if not all of, the following:
- How to figure out what they are meant to be doing in this life
- How to work through their own personal struggles
- How to improve the quality of their lives through personal development and self discovery
- How to grow their own online businesses instead of going to a job they hate every day
- How to earn passive income so they can have more time freedom
- How to decrease their stress and increase their happiness
- How to create their own lifestyle and live their life on their own terms
I want this blog to possibly turn into more of a website where I teach others how to grow their own online businesses and, in turn, earn their own passive income. So I'm getting more focused and will be writing more about blogging, online business, self discovery, and personal development.
I think it's time to take this blog more seriously since it's been making me most of my income... and passively at that! Imagine what I could do if I put in more effort?!
What do you think about the new design?
